Art club
gallery for January 2012
Congratulations to all that have
submitted a picture this month. You have provided us with some
fine work to feast our eyes on and giving us the opportunity to improve our own
awareness of
things that we as individuals like and don't like. I know that most of you
enjoyed painting this one.

A reminder of this months sketch.

Title :-
Farmer Green and his Bull.
This is my second attempt and I'm still not happy
with it. The colours were all wrong in the first one
with brilliant red bricks and this one merges with
the mud. Ah well! Better luck next time.

Title -"Wake Up!!"
You can probably tell that I painted most of the
background before I considered putting the chickens
in the foreground - otherwise my cockerel would have been a bit more
dominant. Just thought it needed
something more than being an empty yard.
THEN I did one too many chickens - they were all
going well until the little one on the far right and I just
couldn't rescue it so it'll have to stay "weird chicken"
- I'm sure every farmyard has one!
Have fun! Helen

Enjoyed doing this and am
reasonably pleased
with the result. Was thinking of adding a tractor
or Land Rover in the yard but had gone too far,
so had to make do with the dog! Had trouble
with tonal contrasts and had to apply ever-so
several washes to make the wall stand
out from the hay.
Best regards,
Mike.

Really wanted my
trees behind the cottage to be
a bit more sparse and wintry but they turned out
more Autumn. Also had problems with the barn
roof and the final result isn’t very convincing. As I
usually have problems with perspective, the
subject and guidelines helped a lot.
Overall, I enjoyed this one.
Best regards,
Ann

This month I have had a
go at pen and watercolour and
enjoyed using this medium. Had a real problem at the front
of the picture when I tried to remove the masking fluid
covering the hens - I tore the paper, but I think I've managed
to hide it. As for using pen, it's very unforgiving and I realise
now that the sketch has to absolutely right before you put
pen to paper! My perspective is a bit off in places but
I couldn't correct it.
Nevertheless, I'm quite happy with this one.
Thanks and kind regards
Gwen

Title :- Summer Farm.
Enjoyed doing this, surprised at the angles
required. Not sure about the size of the chickens
and the swing in the garden, think perhaps the
swing should be a bit bigger or maybe the
chickens smaller.

I enjoyed this challenge but wished I had put
some chickens in the yard or some plants as it
looks so bar, I also need a winch hook above
my hay loft door.
Well done to everyone, all of the paintings are excellent and
sooo different.
Best wishes
Chris

Having not had time in Nov and Dec to
paint I was determined
to do Jan’s. Ended up setting up in the kitchen and starting
whilst cooking ! not to be recommended, I ended up with burnt
potatoes and a flat looking hay stack! Had a go at some animals
(well only ¼ of a horse) am pleased with the horse, not so
pleased with sheep, but they are a lot better than my last
attempt! I’ve never heard of a vanishing point let alone try to
draw one, so I just copied/ traced yours. Pleased with the
picture as a whole, but it felt like I’d forgotten how to paint!
Having said that I think this is the best sun set
I’ve done so far.
Kind regards, Nicola |

Title :- Ghost Farm
Is there anybody there? Not this
time, ran out of time,
had intended adding a couple of sheep and a pitchfork
and no shadows anywhere. I forgot to put a roof on over
the hay. I want to progress in the way that my
imagination flows and not looking in books
and mags to copy.
I just looked at everyone's
paintings,
very good and inspiring to me for the future.
Bye for now

Quite please with the sky but I did not
manage
to get the shadows right to build on the original
idea of sunrise or sunset.
The barn roof and yard were a bit rushed in the
end because of decorating commitments.
But great fun and I am pleased with the
overall effect.

Last months painting just a bit late.
I put the fox in as an afterthought but not sure
its very good and maybe a bit too large?
I think my buildings are a bit lopsided as well
but it could be the angle I took the picture at.
Look forward to starting this months picture now.

Roger. I know each
month we all say 'didn't everyone do well,' but this month I think it is
particularly true and shows how each
member is improving. Special note for me all those areas where I struggled but
others have excelled: - Roy's buildings;
Helen's cockerel and trademark crisp colours and lines; all of Mike's but
particularly the trees, sky and dog ; Peter's wall;
Geoffrey's trees, sky and particularly the lovely foreground colours and
texture; Ann's crisp white cottages and Phil's
straw bales and trees. Well done all, impressive!
Thanks
Gwen
Once again
I really like all the pictures and think you’ve all done really well. I’m
always impressed when others have painted well
what I’ve struggled with, especially trees, wall and animals. Roy I don’t
think the houses merged with the mud, it looks good to me.
I loved Helen’s chickens, wall and trees. Mike’s whole picture looked
lovely especially the dog, I tried a few times to do a dog but
couldn’t get it to look right so in the end took it out. I also liked the
trees and wall. Liked too Gwen’s warm looking farm especially
hay stack, wall and climbing rose. Phil loved the sunset, hay and trees.
Well done to all.
Nicola.
Well I really missed
painting January's picture. But don't despair.
Unfortunately, Pam and I
have had a set back with the sale of our house, this time last week we
had sold and everything was going well.
On Monday afternoon I received a phone call telling me that the buyer had
pulled out.
So back to square one. But I
have snook my paints out, and am making a start on February and
hopefully will even get around to doing
January too. I loved everyone's January painting , the farmyards were all
so alive. I've got a lot to life up to and I am also very sorry that
I won't be at Redlands with you all this year. Pam and I will be in France
on our holiday.
Paul Simpson
Sorry I’ve not been here for a couple of months. Roger says
he’s going to write to my parents, if my attendance doesn’t improve!
Lots of interesting ones this month. Particularly like
Peter’s and Geoff’s.
Pic if the month for me was Gwen’s.
Best regards,
Mike
