Title -
  Waiting for the Stragglers

I thought a brown field would be different and
more natural but then it clashed with the fencing.

Hi All,  I really enjoyed this months picture. I always like the waterscapes scenes, and could see so much in the sketch I didn't know how it would end up. Well as you can see , I had plenty of spare time this month and made 3 attempts.
All of which could have been better , but then that's why we practice. Right!!  Looking forward to seeing how you
 viewed the scene.
Oh Yes! I know, those of you that met me the other weekend, don't think I look old enough to be a Grandad, well on Sunday 16th I was made a Grandad for the second time. My son and his Partner brought little Joshua Jonathan into the world. He is just perfect in every little detail, and a perfect cousin for my
daughters little angel, Isabelle Rose who is 20mths. old
And I said I had lots of time to spare.

Quite enjoyed this one.  Probably not enough
contrast with field behind to make the stile subject
stand out enough but decided to “put down the
brush and step away from the paper” before
I messed it up.

Best regards,
Mike

Had difficulty with perspective of the stile and the
poor walker needed his legs extending from the
first attempt!  Brings a whole new meaning to
 “stretching your legs”.
Not very happy with final result.

Best regards,
Ann

"A Very Yorkshire Nativity"
I took the liberty of making this month's challenge
 suitable for Christmas cards.
The idea was somewhat smarter than it's execution,
however, the foreground is a bit messy and the poor
collie dog is a bit weird but they are my first attempt
at figures in one of your challenges so, overall,  it
could have come out worse and I enjoyed painting
it so that's the main thing!!
I do have a teensy-weensy confession to make -
I used the dreaded white paint on the stile because I forgot to put snow on it and couldn't wash it out
 successfully!       Helen

Not to happy with stile but pleased with rest,
and a painting in on time for once.

Ps. no gouache used.

Quite liked this but felt I needed more colour and
a focal point.  Almost tried to put a robin on
the fence but didn't have the courage !
 All the best

Finished this one quite quickly and I think it shows!
Thought I'd have a go at a cow as I tend to avoid
animals. Oh and the flock of birds are meant to
be Shell ducks!  Tried to spend less time on the
background this time and concentrate on the
foreground. Had to put the tree on the left hand
side to hide a multitude of sins, but I'm sure that's
what 'spontaneous' art is all about!
Regards to all,
Gwen.

This scene brought back happy memories of two
wonderful days on your painting course in Ross on
Wye, and lovely walks I did along the river.
The biggest problem I had this month (as last month)
was finding time to paint, so this ended up being
done in several sessions.
I had intended to do at least two different paintings,
but just didn't find the time. I still hope to have another
go soon. I tried to put in a fisherman on the bank but
just couldn't get it to look right so in the end left him
out.  I really enjoyed the subject, thanks.

I'm happier to paint a bit more vibrant with a feel
of autumnal hues. The stile just managed to fit on
the bottom. Confession, I cheated with the man on the pathway sign, did in felt tip, looking more like the Michelin man, and I felt it started to
dominate the painting. Tried to change and
nearly messed up completely. I enjoyed
painting the leaves on the right hand side,
there's a lot around at present.
The fisherman was an after thought and my
husband thought he'd got taken short!!!!

Here is my attempt at the Country style.
The picture here is the fourth attempt,  I ruined three earlier pictures with the sky going wrong on two, and the bushes in
the foreground on a third - shame that one had a really nice sky that I was proud of.   I think the path on this version  was a mistake as it left me with dark tones for the style and the path
next to each other. I was not really sure what to do with the
middle ground when it came to it.
I found the style surprisingly difficult- dealing with different
tones especially around the steps. It all ended up darks against
darks. I think I need to plan out the different tones and how light
and dark fit against each other more carefully rather than making
it up as I go. Really enjoyed the challenge though.  I painted
this while on holiday  in France hence the addition of the
 French Château in the background.

Hi all.
Over the coming months I will be looking for possible venues to hold next years annual club meeting as I don't think our last meeting venue at the Redlands in Meriden will be big enough. I hope to find somewhere fairly central to minimise members travel time and costs.
To do this, could you help me by e-mailing me with the town and county you are living in.
Roger

Wow. Not even November yet and all the pictures are up to see. I think everyone would agree, even you Roger, but I definitely think we are
improving as the months go on, even if some people will use WHITE paint, not to mention any names . HELEN.
Geoff I think you have to be man of the match this month, brilliant art.
We all seem to be saying or thinking the same thing about the amount of Green in the painting this month, but it's what you see when
you walk in the country. And there are more animals and people cropping up in the paintings too.
Helen why is your sheppard taking a pineapple for a walk though. :P tongue  >:) devil
Well must go, got to get the paints out.
 Paul

A word from the administrator  (Roger)  to Helen............Don't let people like Paul influence you in not putting pineapples in future pictures.
I think it looks very nice.

Hi All,  Great works by all. Real variety . Helen, not sure about pineapple and that white stuff and I don't mean snow, but what ever turns you on. Must admire all who put figures and animals in scene.
Think I'm going to have fun with this months painting. Think Rogers reading my mind again as I'm working on a painting of priory
street and the Cathedral in Coventry.   Happy painting to all.
 Ivan

I like Nicola's very sunny picture, and was Helen's lamb born very late or very early? But I must agree with Paul that Geoff should be nominated man of the match for this month.
Roy

October was a good month for all. Congratulations to all who added people and animals to their scene, loved the expression on the
cows face.  Helen, you are a brave girl painting animals held under arm, well done. I kept the difficult bits out of my scenes!
Robert, liked your sky very much and really good trees. Thanks Paul and Roy for your kind vote.
In fact, liked all the efforts, the more we do the more experience we get. Best wishes,
 Geoff.

You men are SO rude!    Everyone knows that the shepherds took a pineapple lamp to the birth of Jesus!
Geoff - Envious of both pictures but, especially, the stile in the first and the foreground in the second so maybe mix your techniques!
Other highlights - Roy's beagle, Mike's foxgloves, Ivan's trees, Gwen's ducks and Phil's bleached shading on the stile.
Congratulations to Paul on your growing family - refuse to say anything about you lovely poplar trees 'cos I don't think I'm talking to you!!
Peter, go for the robin next time - Renee & Ann, ignore those naughty comments and keep challenging yourself!
And welcome to all our newbies this month - lovely to see all the variety!
Apologies if I don't get November's picture in on time - back operation tomorrow morning and may be out of action for a while - but looks a real challenge and will definitely do it when I can.
Helen

Hello to all and especially our new members. As ever, really enjoyed seeing how we all interpreted the sketch so differently. The areas I found difficult, but were skilfully dealt with by some of you are as follows: -
Roy's people in first picture. Lynne and Phil's foreground grasses, Helen's brave night scene. I really like Peter's continued muted style, especially the foliage - go for the bird/animal next time Peter! Very much liked Robin's crisp, bright picture and tree detail, but hats off again to Geoffrey - a soft and loose picture but still having wonderful detail and colour.
Regards Gwen x

Again I loved looking at all your pictures.  Welcome to new names and well done, pictures look great.  I have to agree that I admire all who
put in people and animals as I just couldn’t get them right.  I liked the people in Roy’s first painting and the dogs in the second and Gwen’s
cow, also mikes foxgloves Paul’s and Peter’s foreground trees as I really struggled with that part of the picture.
I also really liked the lighting effect in Geoff’s and Rob’s. I would still like to have a 2nd attempt at this painting but this month has been my
busiest ever, I’ve only now got round to looking at all your paintings in detail let alone get a paint brush out! The joys of being a working mum!

Hi All,
I've just come across this site and thought I would give you all the link to it. I think it could prove quite useful for painting trees and shrubs etc.
just to get an idea of the shape of a particular tree.      Hope you find it handy.
